One of many privileges we have here at the Resource Center is that of providing services and resources to several of our island veterans. Our partners in serving our veteran friends include the San Juan County Veterans Advisory Board, a veteran advocate at the Opportunity Council in Bellingham, Orcas Senior Center, and the Sunrise Volunteers!
Your support of OCRC allows our staff to complete applications, write grants, reach out to veteran’s resources, provide home visits, and coordinate support efforts for our veterans in need. The veterans we have served most recently include a mother of five, a gentleman and his wife in a financial crisis as a result of mounting medical expenses, and a homebound 89-year-old veteran with a plethora of challenges.
Our veteran mom was supplied with diapers, groceries for three months, and payment of her electric bill so she could afford to take leave from her work for 12 weeks to be home with her newborn.
The couple facing possible bankruptcy received assistance with a mortgage payment, ferry tickets for medical appointments, and grocery vouchers. They have since refinanced their home and paid off all of their debt!
Our 89-year-old veteran received grocery vouchers for three months, assistance with purchasing his medication, trash removal, and trimming and weeding of his yard. He stated that he can purchase the quality groceries that he hasn’t been able to purchase for some time, and the yard he has spent so many years cultivating and nurturing will be restored to its previous glory thanks to dedicated volunteers!
