As we begin 2025, January—designated as Mental Wellness Month—presents an ideal opportunity to focus on our emotional health. After the holiday season's whirlwind, this natural pause allows us to turn our attention inward. While we often prioritize physical health, nurturing our mental well-being deserves equal attention.
Many assume mental wellness means maintaining constant happiness, but true emotional health encompasses much more. As humans, we naturally experience a spectrum of feelings—from joy to sadness, excitement to fear. Rather than suppressing these emotions, wellness means acknowledging and understanding our full emotional range.
Sometimes, maintaining emotional equilibrium requires professional guidance. The Community Wellness Program (CWP), offered through the collaboration of San Juan County, the Orcas Community Resource Center and a team of eight contracted therapists, makes mental healthcare accessible through low-cost counseling services for qualifying uninsured or under-insured Orcas Island residents. The program offers up to 12 sessions with copayments on a sliding scale, ensuring financial circumstances don't prevent anyone from seeking help.
The Resource Center provides additional support through:
This Mental Wellness Month, consider taking steps toward better emotional health. Whether through professional counseling, personal self-care practices, or mindfulness techniques, investing in your mental well-being can enhance resilience, reduce stress, and create a more balanced life.

This credit is designed to support low- and moderate-income individuals and families, ensuring that hard-working Washingtonians get some relief. Since its launch in 2023, the WFTC has provided over 359,000 refunds totaling more than $263.4 million—making a real impact across the state.

As busy parents, the included dinner was a huge win! Thank you for making us feel so supported as we begin this next chapter." ~Tobin, parent attendee

Finding and keeping stable housing on Orcas can feel overwhelming, especially when resources are scattered and rental laws can be hard to navigate. That’s why this spring, a dedicated group of community members, renters, and advocates came together to change that story.
In an effort to allow more voices in the community to be heard, the Housing Focus Group began meeting weekly at the Orcas Community Resource Center. They pooled lived experiences, legal insights, and practical tips to create a new Housing Resource Guide for our island community. The guide aims to make it easier for renters and landlords alike to understand their rights and responsibilities, access support, and find clear steps for navigating housing challenges.
“Our group brought together people who have seen the realities of renting on Orcas from every angle,” said Cheryl Helm, a Resource Center staff member who helped facilitate the meetings along with Paula Gustafson. “We heard stories of last-minute moves, unclear lease terms, and tenants afraid to speak up about unsafe conditions. We also heard from landlords who want to do the right thing, but don’t always know how.”
The guide includes step-by-step checklists for moving in, understanding leases and deposits, knowing when and how repairs should happen, and accessing mediation or legal resources if conflicts arise. Group members also explored ways to share the guide online and in print, and are considering hosting regular community gatherings to foster connection between landlords, tenants, and local advocates.
This grassroots project shows what’s possible when people come together with a shared goal: making housing on Orcas more understandable, fair, and rooted in dignity for everyone who calls this island home.
The Housing Focus Group is one of several recent community-led efforts organized by the Resource Center. Earlier this year, a health-focused group helped spark meaningful conversations around wellness and culminated in a successful community health & wellness fair. Upcoming focus groups will center the voices of Spanish-speaking community members and another group will explore financial literacy—continuing the goal of creating space for shared experiences, practical knowledge, and collaborative solutions.

August is here, and a new school year is just around the corner! If you have school-aged kids, we’ve gathered some helpful resources to make the back-to-school transition a little easier.
Sports Physicals
The Sports Physical Clinic will look a little different this summer. In order to gain more privacy and thorough exams for athletes and doctors, the Boosters are encouraging athletes to make independent appointments with their doctors in their clinics. They are committed to making sure every athlete can play sports and are working with island doctors to achieve this goal. If there are students who do not have a doctor or need support to complete their sports physical before practices begin, please contact the Boosters at oiboosters@gmail.com and they will work with you to connect with a doctor.
Immunization Clinics
You can sign up for an upcoming immunization clinic online or call for assistance at 360-378-4474. Regular vaccination clinics on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Islands are for ALL children through the age of 18 years and UNINSURED adults. Clinics are ferry-service dependent. No one will be denied services due to inability to pay.
Athletic Fees Assistance Program
The Orcas Community Resource Center and OI Boosters have partnered together to support families in need of assistance with athletic expenses. If sports-related expenses for your student-athlete are a hurdle, please email the OI Booster Club at oiboosters@gmail.com or the Resource Center at info@orcascrc.org.
Apply for Free & Reduced school meals
Contact the OISD office to see if your household qualifies for free or reduced-price school meals - you may also be eligible for decreased fees to participate in sports or other school programs.
Teen Tent at the Orcas Island Food Bank
Throughout the school year, the Food Bank encourages students to stop by their Teen Tent to grab a quick snack or lunch item. Age-appropriate food items are offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am-1pm.
Funhouse After School Program
The Funhouse Afterschool Program provides a safe and inclusive environment for all Orcas kids in grades K-5. Staff offer daily pick-up from Orcas Island Elementary and Orcas Christian School during the school year. Activities include games, arts & crafts, outdoor play and more! In a world where online and off island business are easy to choose, the Orcas community has continued to support locals by choosing to keep their dollars on island. Island Market and Ray’s Pharmacy are two of the longest standing businesses on Orcas and a lifeline for many of us for our basic needs, food and pharmacy. They are teaming up for a third year to offer a $15,000
fundraising match in support of the Orcas Community Resource Center! This generous contribution furthers essential services for islanders such as housing support, physical and mental healthcare navigation, food access, transportation support, and more. Every donation is matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $15,000.
Meeting the Growing Needs of Our Community
Much like across the nation, islanders are facing rising costs of living along with housing shortages and the need for supportive services is evident. "We’ve seen more and more working families, individuals and seniors who need help to make ends meet," said a Resource Center team member. “Thanks to this matching gift, we can stretch every donation further and help more people stay in their homes, keep the lights on, and get the medical care they need.”
Jacob and Jason Linnes of Orcas Island Market emphasized the importance of community support in the decision to offer the match:
“The Orcas community has always been a place where we look out for one another. With our growth over the last 128 years, Island Market is proud to collaborate with partners like the Orcas Community Resource Center to ensure that all islanders have access to a safety net when needed. We are grateful for the long-standing partnership with our friends at Ray’s Pharmacy and Island Life, working together to support our community. We cherish the chance to give back to a community that has collectively supported us for over a century.”
Life-Changing Services
The Orcas Community Resource Center is a lifeline for many islanders, providing essential services such as rental and utility assistance, mental health referrals, hygiene products, and more. Last year alone, the Resource Center assisted over 700 households in navigating financial and personal crises.
"Without the support of the Resource Center, I don’t know how I would have made it through this year," said one Orcas resident, who received help with facing unexpected medical bills. "They were there for me when I needed it most."
How You Can Help
The fundraising match is active throughout the month of September. Donations can be made online at orcascrc.org, by mail, or in person. Every dollar counts, and with the match, your gift will go twice as far. A sincere thank you to Island Market, Ray's Pharmacy, and Island Life for their dedication to our island's well-being. By choosing to shop local, we support island businesses, boost our local economy, and reinforce the very foundation of our community.
