...came to us after losing their job. OCRC helped apply for health insurance, unemployment benefits and rental assistance. They also enrolled in counseling to address some long standing mental health/addiction issues. The unemployment claim required additional documentation and after a few months, the claim and back benefits were paid! They now have another full time job that provides support and continue to work with a therapist toward long term wellness
...reached out to us with chronic health issues including partial blindness and diabetes. Uninsured and unable to earn a proper living due to health issues, OCRC arranged for surgery on both eyes by accessing a grant, which restored eyesight. We coordinated treatment for diabetic foot care, ferry tickets for medical appointments (pre-op, surgery, and post op appointments), firewood, utilities, and rent via local, county, and federal programs, as well as our community supporters to ensure a smooth recovery.
...reached out to us with an overwhelming situation. Single after a decades long marriage, they were not yet receiving any child support. Thanks to our Coates Cabinet hygiene bank program, Project Pal and Dental Van services, OCRC has been able to assist with household items, utilities, and dental care needs to to relieve some of the household expenses.
...came to us after power had been shut off at home. As a senior, making utility payments on a fixed income is a struggle. We were able to assist with reinstating power and payment toward the bill. Lights are on and this veteran can stay warm once again. We have received a surge of requests such as this due to the recent cold snap and rate increases. Gratefully, through generous community support, we have been able to assist many islanders in need with keeping their power on.
...at risk of losing shelter sought our assistance. The Resource Center was able to access a grant to assist with housing costs. Staff learned of a history of a severe, chronic, respiratory condition. OCRC arranged for first ever treatment by a pulmonologist, dentist, and eye doctor. After establishing a positive relationship of trust with staff, our client agreed to seek substance use disorder treatment and is now setting goals for long-term improved health, sober living, and sustainable housing. OCRC staff will continue to assist in pursuit of social security disability benefits and much needed dentures.
